This month we tested the new POINTSCALE 5.0 with optional calculator attachment and optional backlight.  Our test models were the 150 gram capacity version but there are also 500g and 1000g versions available.  The POINTSCALE has been around for quite a long time and is one of the founding fathers of the modern pocket scale.   It definitely grew a bit long in the tooth over the past few years as many newer "cooler" pocket scales came out and flattened this old favorite.  We are happy to see that the POINTSCALE has been updated and we became happier as we tested the 5.0 and found all of it's new innovative features.

Outwardly,  the 5.0 appears the same as the older Pointscales.  It has the same general shape both inside and out,  which is probably meant as to not scare off buyers who have grown accustomed to the reputably Pointscale.    The 5.0 has a nice new soft touch rubber keypad, rather than plastic one used in the older models.    The LCD is about 20% larger than before with an extra digit (5 digit LCD rather than 4 digit).   This enables the Pointscale to read to 0.005oz / 0.005ozt which is twice as accurate as the old models.   In addition we found the new LCD much crisper and easier to read.    The backlight feature was nice but as with all backlights only comes in handy if you're weighing in a low light situation.

Our favorite improvement is the new removable cover.  The cover uses a unique new dual hinge releasable design.  It performs as a normal hinged cover, with a magnet clasp to keep the case closed when not in use.  However, when the cover is fully opened you can release it from the hinges (hard to describe but it's a nice simple invention that should have been thought of years ago).   Thus on the 5.0 you can use the cover as a bowl or expansion tray.    Plus, since the covers are now removable,  they're swapable!    Our Pointscale 5.0 came with both the standard plain cover and a calculator cover (see pic).   We found it extremely useful to have a calculator attached to our scale (enabling us to calculate measurements and prices).

The calculator is full featured with a 10 digit display, large rubber keys and a second generation solar power cell.

Our performance tests of the PT 5.0 150g yielded excellent results.  Accuracy was +/- 0.1 / 0.005oz after calibration throughout the weighing spectrum.   Drift was negligible and within proper tolerance (no drift within 20 seconds,  0.1g drift occasionally after 20-40 seconds).  The 5.0 uses My Weigh's new 5PPS (5 Point Protection System) to prevent overload of the scale (now used on most My Weigh pocket scales).   After encouragement from My Weigh we placed a 5kg weight on the tray 10 times.  Normally just putting a 5kg weight on a pocket scale's tray one time would destroy it.  However the Triton wasn't even slightly affected by this abuse.   The 5PPS is a new design where metal protection bars are placed under each corner of the tray and under the load cell itself.  The bars are adjusted during assembly to make contact with the tray if the load cell is overloaded.  It seems that this would take a lot of time consuming work to set each scale in this manner,  but with the lower cost of labor at My Weigh's Chinese factory,  they are seemingly able to implement their new system without huge increases in manufacturing cost.

We admire this new POINTSCALE 5.0 and know it will be a surefire success.  It kept all of the great features of the original Pointscale and added many new ones.   Our major recommendation is to be sure that you are purchasing a 5.0,  not one of the older 4.0's (or various copies of the 4.0) still available in the marketplace.

The POINTSCALE 5.0 is available in 150g,  500g and 1000g capacities.  All three models come complete with calibration weights, batteries, scalepad, small item tray, 4 weighing modes, removable cover and a lifetime warranty.  We recommend purchasing the optional calculator but the backlight is really not necessary unless your application requires low light conditions.
